ENMK Leadership Team Mission StatementWe, as a Leadership Team, strive to exemplify the pillars of pride, excellence, and commitment within our band and throughout our lives.
PRIDE: Representing our band with honor and integrity as excellent examples of leadership and character – supporting our band with voices of encouragement and constructive criticism. EXCELLENCE: Improving, not perfecting, the strengths and skills of everyone in our band family to the best of our ability by helping them realize their limitless potential when backed by positive reinforcement. COMMITMENT: Demanding more of ourselves to promote proactiveness in our band, building a stronger leadership team for future generations, and holding ourselves to a higher standard of dedication and perseverance to prove that we, along with the entire band, are capable of reaching even greater heights. With the guidance of our mission statement, we, the East Noble Leadership Team, will do all that we can to protect the dream we have for the band and for one another. |

I/Me vs. We/Us
As you begin your experience on the leadership team, you have to stop and think to yourself: am I leading myself first? If I am leading myself, is it by example or by my words? Leadership is very hard to teach. If you simply want to help others learn and give them your knowledge, you have the capability of leading. Leadership is not for ego-driven person. If you are doing it for the title of leader or the praise, you are in the wrong place. Go back and think about leaders you know of who inspired you. Did they do it for the praise or the title? Why are you here? Who inspired you? I/Me has to be shed from the start. When we lead, we use the words we/us. We are in charge of this band. We can improve. We lead ourselves. In order to get that point, you have to lead yourself first by example. What are your goals? What can you do to contribute to the band's success?
Servant Leadership
Dr. Tim tells a story about a group of girls who told him at a leadership conference that they have the freshmen bus the seniors' tables at band camp when they are finished eating. Dr. Tim replies, "why don't the seniors bus the freshmen's tables?" To be a leader is to be a servant to others. Dr. Tim goes on to talk about his niece Mallory who reluctantly goes to band camp and comes back all excited because of her section leader Cindy. Cindy went out of her way to introduce herself and introduce Mallory to the flute section, give her a signed t-shirt and help her out. Go out of your way to help your section. If you see them struggling, help them! Relationships are the key to leadership.
"It's not what you can do, or will do, it's what you do do."
"It's not what you can do, or will do, it's what you do do."
Positives come and go but...
Negatives accumulate. The first impression you have on someone makes an impact on them. Words are powerful and we tune people out who yell and scream at us. How will your words affect others? If you yell at your section all the time, they will tune you out as well. Role reversal time: if you were in their shoes, how would you want to be treated? Would you want to be yelled at, talked down to or would you want positive feedback and encouragement? Especially if you're brand new and not sure of what's going on!

Three Basic Laws of Leadership
1. You can't lead others until you lead yourself.
2. You are only worth what you give away; and
3. You can only give away what you have;
They will find themselves enjoying a feeling of personal self-worth, and everyone in the group will benefit from their productive and positive contribution. Take the lead!
